UK Ranks Third in Global Waste Exporting, Reports Cleanhub

10th May 2024

A recent study conducted by Cleanhub has revealed that the United Kingdom holds the position of the third-highest exporter of waste globally. Published last week, the study sheds light on the top 10 countries engaged in the export and import of plastic waste annually.

Export Statistics

According to the findings, these top exporting countries collectively export over 4.4 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, accounting for a staggering 71% of all plastic waste exports worldwide. Cleanhub compiled its data from industry and scientific reports.

Germany leads the chart as the highest exporter, dispatching approximately 688,067 tonnes of plastic waste annually, closely followed by Japan with 606,374 tonnes. The UK secures the third position, exporting 600,000 tonnes of plastic waste, while the Netherlands follows closely behind with 576,702 tonnes. The United States ranks fifth, exporting 431,841 tonnes, followed by Belgium with 391,263 tonnes.

Import Trends

On the import side, the Netherlands emerges as the top importer, receiving a substantial 796,234 tonnes of plastic waste. Turkey secures the second-highest position, with imports totaling 622,781 tonnes, while Germany also plays a significant role as an importer, acquiring 503,268 tonnes.

The United States stands as a notable importer, with imports amounting to 446,831 tonnes, followed by Vietnam with 378,944 tonnes and Malaysia with 351,284 tonnes.

Environmental Impact and Challenges

The export of plastic waste presents a significant challenge in addressing global plastic pollution. While countries capable of proper waste processing export substantial amounts, the responsibility often falls on countries lacking the necessary infrastructure, leading to dumping or burning practices that result in toxic water and air supplies.

The report highlights that approximately 5% of ocean plastic pollution, equating to around 635,000 tonnes, originates from these exported plastics, including bottles, bags, plates, and various waste items. Illegal burning or dumping of exported plastic waste further contributes to air and water pollution, releasing toxic chemicals into the environment.

Moreover, the transportation of five million tonnes of plastic exports annually results in the emission of approximately 320,900 tonnes of CO2, exacerbating environmental concerns.
