Sharp Reduction in Carrier Bags Found on UK Beaches
A recent report from the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) reveals a dramatic 80% decrease in the presence of carrier bags on UK beaches. The State Of Our Beaches 2023 report highlights a notable improvement in beach cleanliness concerning plastic carrier bags, a significant shift from previous years.
Widespread Beverage-Related Litter Detected
Despite the encouraging news about carrier bags, the study underscores the persistence of beverage-related litter. The MCS’s findings indicate that 97% of UK beaches were littered with drinks-related waste last year. During the 2023 beach clean-ups, over 480,000 litter items were collected, equating to an average of 167 pieces of litter per 100 metres of beach.
Prevalence of Metal Cans and Glass Bottles
The report further reveals that metal drink cans were present on 66% of beaches, while glass bottles were found on 52%. Additionally, the study identified a troubling trend with 940 vapes being recovered, discovered in 42% of inland litter collection efforts.
Plastic Remains Predominant
The MCS’s volunteer surveys illustrate a concerning trend: 90% of the litter found on beaches consists of plastic materials. This ongoing issue highlights the need for continued efforts in plastic waste reduction and management.
Ongoing Efforts to Combat Plastic Pollution
While the reduction in carrier bags is a positive development, the persistence of other plastic waste underscores the importance of sustained environmental initiatives. The Marine Conservation Society’s report reflects progress but also signals the ongoing challenge of managing and reducing plastic pollution on UK beaches.
