EA Issues Warning: Waste Carriers Must Register Directly
Waste Businesses Urged to Avoid Third-Party Registration
The Environment Agency (EA) has issued a clear warning to waste carriers, brokers, and dealers in England: do not use third-party agents to register or renew your licenses. Businesses must go through the official government website to ensure compliance and avoid unnecessary risks.
Who Needs to Register?
If your business is involved in handling waste in any of the following ways, you are legally required to register with the EA:
- Transporting waste
- Arranging waste disposal or trade
- Buying, selling, or disposing of waste
The Environment Services Association (ESA) has also advised businesses to steer clear of third-party registration services. Using unofficial agents can lead to extra costs, incorrect registrations, and even legal trouble.
How Much Does Registration Cost?
For businesses that only transport their own waste (except construction and demolition waste), registration is free.
For all other businesses:
- Initial registration – £154
- Renewal fee – £105
Why Registering Directly is Crucial
The EA stresses the importance of providing accurate details during registration. Using incorrect or incomplete information, even by accident, could lead to removal from the register. If your business is unknowingly deregistered, you could be operating illegally without even realising it.
Many businesses using third-party agents miss out on vital updates and risk receiving penalties or cease-and-desist notices. To stay compliant, always register directly with the EA.
Operating Without a License is a Criminal Offence
Working as an unregistered waste carrier, broker, or dealer is illegal and can result in enforcement action. The EA and ESA urge businesses and the public to report any suspected illegal waste activities, including those operating without a valid license.
To avoid fines and legal issues, businesses should take control of their registration and ensure they comply with the law.
