Deposit Return Scheme Logo Requirements Confirmed for UK Producers

Drinks producers across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland now have formal guidance on how the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) logo must be applied to in-scope containers ahead of the scheme’s launch on 1 October 2027.

Exchange for Change, the UK Deposit Management Organisation (DMO) responsible for designing and delivering the scheme, has published detailed branding requirements to ensure that the DRS mark is applied consistently across all eligible bottles and cans.

For producers, this is not a minor design update. It is a regulatory packaging requirement that will apply to every in-scope product placed on the market once the scheme goes live.

What the Logo Guidance Covers

The published guidance sets out how the DRS logo must appear on containers that fall within scope of the scheme in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The purpose is straightforward: every eligible container must be clearly identifiable as part of the Deposit Return Scheme. The mark will signal to consumers that a refundable deposit has been paid and that the container can be returned.

The documentation provides clarity on:

  • Logo design specifications
  • Size and positioning requirements
  • Reproduction standards
  • Application across different packaging formats

Exchange for Change has stated that the aim is to give producers “full clarity” well in advance of the 2027 start date, allowing sufficient time for packaging redesign, print runs and stock planning.

Why Consistency Matters

From October 2027, the DRS icon will appear on every in-scope bottle and can across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. According to Exchange for Change, visual consistency is central to the scheme’s effectiveness.

A single, recognisable mark is intended to:

  • Build consumer recognition
  • Reduce confusion at point of sale
  • Support return behaviour
  • Improve overall collection rates

Russell Davies, CEO of Exchange for Change, has emphasised that a consistent logo will play a practical role in driving recycling behaviour once the scheme becomes operational.

For producers and retailers alike, brand execution must now sit alongside regulatory compliance. Packaging artwork approvals and supply chain coordination will need to factor in the mandatory logo placement.

Operational Implications for Producers

The confirmation of logo requirements shifts the focus from policy design to implementation.

Producers placing drinks on the market in England, Scotland or Northern Ireland will need to:

  • Review current packaging formats
  • Update artwork files to incorporate the DRS logo
  • Coordinate print production timelines
  • Manage existing stock to avoid non-compliant packaging post-launch

Given typical packaging lead times, early preparation is critical. Products manufactured close to the launch date will need to be fully compliant from day one.

Businesses operating across multiple UK nations will also need to monitor any differences in scheme scope or administration to ensure cross-border alignment.

Preparing for October 2027

The Deposit Return Scheme represents one of the most significant shifts in UK packaging regulation in recent years. With logo requirements now confirmed, producers have greater certainty but also a clear timeline.

October 2027 may seem distant, yet packaging updates, supply contracts and inventory management cycles mean planning must begin well in advance.

For businesses across the drinks supply chain, DRS readiness now includes not just registration and reporting, but compliant branding on every eligible container.
