Heatwave Boom Could Send 4.3 Million Mini Fans Into UK Household Bins
This summer’s heatwave has sparked a surge in demand for handheld mini fans, but recycling campaign Material Focus believes millions of them could end up in household waste before the year is out.
Its latest research estimates that 7.9 million mini fans will be sold across the UK in 2026, with as many as 4.3 million likely to be thrown into general household bins instead of being recycled.
Cheap Gadgets, Growing Waste Problem
Mini fans have quickly become one of the latest examples of FastTech – low-cost electrical products bought for convenience but often discarded after only a short period of use.
The category also includes:
- Charging cables
- Earbuds
- Small electronic accessories
- Novelty electrical gadgets
Although these products are inexpensive and compact, they are still electrical items and should never be placed in general waste.
Small Devices Still Contain Valuable Materials

Material Focus found that interest in mini fans rose sharply during June’s heatwave, with Google searches for the products more than doubling compared with the previous month.
