UK Discards Millions of Vapes Each Week Despite Ban

UK Still Throwing Away 6 Million Vapes a Week – Despite Ban

The UK’s disposable vape ban was meant to reset the market. It has, but not nearly enough.

New data from Material Focus shows that 6.3 million vapes and pods are still being thrown away every week, even after the ban on single-use devices came into force in June 2025.

Over the past four years, that adds up to 1.18 billion devices discarded, most of them ending up in general waste.

A Ban That Helped, But Didn’t Solve the Problem

There has been some progress. The number of vapes thrown away weekly has dropped by 23% compared to the previous year.

But the core issue hasn’t changed:

  • people are still disposing of electrical items in the wrong place

As Scott Butler, Executive Director of Material Focus, puts it:

“The vapocalypse continues… six million vapes and pods are still being thrown away a week, and this remains a major fire risk and a huge waste of valuable materials”

Why Waste Operators Are Taking This Seriously

This isn’t just about litter or recycling targets.

Vapes contain hidden lithium batteries, and when they end up in general waste, they become dangerous.

  • Batteries are crushed during collection
  • Fires start in bin lorries and recycling centres
  • Infrastructure is damaged and staff are put at risk

The numbers reflect that risk:

Over 1,200 battery fires recorded across the waste stream

  • A 71% increase since 2022
  • Major operators reporting daily fire incidents

This is now a real operational issue for the waste sector, not a niche concern.

Valuable Materials Being Lost at Scale

At the same time, vapes contain critical materials like lithium and copper.

When these devices are thrown into general waste:

  • Materials are not recovered
  • Resources are permanently lost
  • Pressure on supply chains increases

This is exactly the kind of waste the UK is trying to reduce, yet it continues at scale.

The Real Problem: Awareness and Access

The research highlights a clear gap between behaviour and awareness:

  • 47% of users don’t know vapes can be recycled
  • 80% say there isn’t enough information
  • 57% would choose retailers offering recycling points

There is also already a legal obligation for retailers selling vapes to provide takeback options, but this is not consistently visible or enforced.

To make recycling easier, users can find local drop-off points via:

What Happens Next

A new Tobacco and Vapes Bill is moving through Parliament and is expected to introduce:

  • Licensing requirements for vape retailers
  • Stronger accountability across the supply chain
  • Greater emphasis on takeback and recycling schemes

The direction is clear:

  • less tolerance for improper disposal
  • more responsibility on both retailers and producers

What This Means for Businesses

For businesses, especially those handling waste streams, this is becoming a compliance and safety issue.

Incorrect disposal of small electricals:

  • increases fire risk
  • disrupts operations
  • creates liability

Proper waste handling and separation are no longer optional – they are part of running a safe and compliant operation.
